Making headlines and history

10/07/2018 | Chilly Powder

Sunday 10th July 2011 saw the last ever edition of the UK's most widely sold newspaper, the News of the World.

Having hosted the travel editor's daughter on a press trip the previous summer, it was unknown to us that her review would be printed in the last ever edition of the newpaper and in being so Chily Powder became part of British media history!

Take a trip back in time and read the full review below:

Alps ski resort is cyclists summer haven

It’s summer in the French alps and time to zoom down the ski slopes … on a bike.

Picturesque Morzine, home to skiers and snowboarders during the winter, is transformed into a sun-kissed holiday destination at this time of year.

And the range of activities in this part of the Portes du Soleil region is astounding - from trekking to horse-riding and canyoning to white-water rafting. If you’re really adventurous try “via-ferata”, an adventure trail where you climb over rock faces at dizzying heights.

But most people come to Morzine in the summer to mountain bike. The Portes du Soleil is one of the world’s largest areas for the sport. It links 12 resorts with 24 chairlifts specially designed to carry bikes – so you can avoid those really steep uphill bits.

These are the same lifts that transport you to the snowy peaks in winter for skiing but you’ll certainly notice the price difference. A six day summer pass costs just €84 for an adult (£75) and €56 for a child (£50) – less than half the winter cost.

For those wanting a more relaxing holiday, there’s gold fishing or tennis too – as well as some great day trips – visit a cheese diary or book a horse drawn sleigh trip to see the sights.

And for the kids, check out the swimming centre in town with paddling pools and bouncy castles to keep the little ones entertained whilst you grab some chill-out time on the sun loungers.

Chilly Powder is a favourite with families visiting Morzine, thanks to its winning recipe of a luxury catered chalet and on-site nannies. Run by husband and wife team Francesca and Paul Eyre (who live next door), it is open all year round. And because it has a creche and kids club, it offers parents the flexibility to choose which outdoor activities to do as a family and when to leave the kids behind.

Francesca admits, “I actually prefer the summer to the ski season – it just feels so much more relaxed and there is so much on offer. We love entertaining families and seeing them have such a fun time.”

Fully- qualified nannies run the creche, equipped with all the baby essentials. And while the older children can make the most of the table football, pool table and PlayStation, after a hard day on the mountain, mums and dads can come back for a sauna and message before drinks in the bar or a dip in the outdoor jacuzzi.

But the icing on Chilly Powder’s cake is the food (they’ve even got their own cook book) which is to die for. Kids are offered earlier meal times and specially designed menus while adults enjoy delicious four course fine dining plus canapes, coffee and chocolate. And with all that exercise you’ll be doing in the day, there’s no need to feel guilty when you tuck into the cheese!

The friendly team at Chilly Powder will organise activities and book any instructors or guides you need.

So all that’s left for you to do in the evenings is take your glass of wine (included with your evening meal) out to the garden and picture yourself coming back to Morzine’s mountains for the winter season!
